The Hiawatha Public Library is pleased to offer free wireless Internet access. Here are answers to some questions you might have about using wireless in the Library.

Wireless Internet Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is wireless access?

A. Wireless access is Internet access using radio frequencies as opposed to using cables. This enables a library patron to bring their own laptop or wireless device to the library and use the library’s Internet connection from anywhere within the library’s “hotspot” or the range of the wireless signal. The library’s Internet access is unfiltered.


Q. What do I need to access the wireless network?

A. A laptop computer, PDA, or other device with a wireless network interface card, 802.11b or later. A charged battery. Some electrical outlets are available, but the Library cannot guarantee availability. Compatible headphones if you wish to use audio files.


Q. How can I use wireless Internet at the Library?

A. Most users can simply bring their wireless-enabled laptop computer or other wireless device to the Library and turn it on. The computer will automatically recognize the wireless network. If your laptop does not have wireless built-in, you can install a Wi-Fi-compatible network card. The Library cannot guarantee your equipment will work with the Library’s network.


Q. Will I need any special settings or passwords to connect?

A. No special encryption settings, user names, or passwords are required.


Q. Is my information safe while using wireless?

A. Your information is not protected while using wireless unless you are connected to a web page that employs encryption (stores, banks, etc.). Keep this in mind if you are accessing sensitive business or personal information.


Q. What about virus protection?

A. It is solely the responsibility of the wireless device owner/user to provide anti-virus protection.


Q. Are there restrictions on my use of the Internet?

A. Wireless users agree to abide by the Library’s Computer Policy and Regulations which prohibits abusive or illegal activity while using the Library’s Internet service. Wireless security equipment protects the Library’s internal network.


Q. Can I search the Library Catalog and special databases using wireless?

A. Yes. To search the Catalog, go to and click on Library Online Catalog, then click on On-Line Resources.


Q. Can I print while using wireless?

A. Printing is not available via the wireless connection. If you need to print, please save your work to a floppy, CD, or USB jump drive and log on to a library computer workstation to print.


Q. Can the Library help me configure my equipment?

A. Sorry, but everyone’s computer is different and you are responsible for knowing how to configure your own equipment. The Library cannot be responsible for any changes you make to your computer settings. If you need additional assistance, you may need to contact the manufacturer of your hardware or software. The Library staff cannot provide any help beyond this FAQ page.
